Overview:
Shawmut Capital is an independent, stand-alone venture capital firm that was formed in 1998 by Joel Alvord , the former Chairman of Fleet Financial Group. The firm acquired the rights to the Shawmut name and the logo of Chief Obbatinewat, both of which had been retired as a result of the merger of Shawmut National Corporation and Fleet Financial Group in 1995. The "Shawmut" name and image date back to 1836 when Shawmut Bank was established in Boston. "Shawmut" was derived from the original Algonquin Indian word "Mashauwomuk", which referred to the Charles River region in the Boston area that was home to the native inhabitants for eight thousand years. Over the subsequent 160 years, the Shawmut logo grew to be recognized throughout the country as a symbol of success in the financial services industry. Shawmut currently manages $108 million in committed equity capital. | |
